Black Knight Solutions is a consulting company established in 2024 specializing in Emergency Management and Business Continuity. We support public- and private-sector organizations in strengthening resilience through tailored planning, training, and exercise design. Our work focuses on practical, standards-aligned solutions that help clients prepare for, respond to, and recover from disruptions with confidence.

Richard (Rick) Walker

Founder / Managing Director

Richard Walker is an emergency management and business continuity professional with experience spanning military operations, provincial coordination, and private-sector preparedness. As Managing Director of Black Knight Solutions, he oversees company strategy, operations, and client delivery—ensuring that every project reflects the firm’s commitment to practical, credible, and standards-based emergency management solutions.

From 2021 to 2024, Richard served with the New Brunswick Emergency Management Organization (NBEMO) as an Operations Officer and later as a Special Projects Officer, developing and implementing training and exercise programs that strengthened provincial readiness.

A former Canadian Armed Forces Artillery Officer, Richard commanded teams in complex environments and supported coalition operations during a 2017 Middle East deployment, refining joint targeting and coordination processes. He has also served his communities as a volunteer firefighter in Oromocto, NB, and Langford, BC.

Richard holds a B.Sc. in Psychology from the University of Victoria and an Associate Certificate in Emergency Management from the Justice Institute of British Columbia. He maintains ICS 100/200/300 certifications, is an Associate Business Continuity Professional (ABCP), and is pursuing the IAEM Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) credential.

Grounded in professionalism, service, and continuous improvement, Richard directs the strategic and operational backbone of Black Knight Solutions—building a company that helps clients prepare, adapt, and lead with confidence in the face of disruption.

Brennen de Carufel

Senior Consultant

Brennen de Carufel is a Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) and Canadian Armed Forces Officer with over a decade of operational and leadership experience in both military and public sector emergency management. At Black Knight Solutions, he leads the development of training, exercise, and preparedness programs that help communities and organizations strengthen resilience and operational readiness.

Brennen’s background spans strategic planning, incident command instruction, and large-scale inter-agency exercises through his work with the Government of New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization and the Canadian Armed Forces. He has also represented Canada internationally as part of a Combat Service Support Mentoring Team, contributing to security-sector capacity-building initiatives in the Middle East.

He has completed professional development through the Army Command and Staff College’s Army Operations Course and executive education with Harvard University, focusing on leadership and emergency management. His leadership and service have been recognized through multiple national honours, including the Emergency Management Exemplary Service Award and the King Charles III Coronation Medal.

Guided by integrity, collaboration, and service, Brennen brings authenticity and precision to every engagement—helping clients build systems and teams capable of leading effectively in times of crisis.

As a company, we have several objectives that we aim to achieve. While these objectives will never be fully completed, we orient ourselves around these objectives to guide us in our practices and in how we provide our services. Below are the three objectives that Black Knight Solutions strives to accomplish within the community.

Improve communities ability to respond and manage emergency and disaster related events as part of an all-hazards plan taking note of historic lessons learned from previous incidents.

Sharing the Knowledge

Share knowledge in planning and preparedness in chaotic environments produced by predictable or unpredictable events due to human or nature induced events.

Training Hard

Train individuals to thrive in chaotic and stressed environments to act in accordance with established policies and institutional values while putting forth the goals of emergency response.

Commitment to our people and the people we serve. As previous public servants, we understand how important it is to provide a service to the public and thus we will do our best to provide the best service we can to help you achieve that aim.

Open-mindedness

Every situation is never the same and there are always more than one way of doing business. Having an open mind can discover new ways of accomplishing the goal as long as the intent and end state are kept in mind with safety at the forefront. 

Innovation

Advancement is made through trying out new ways of doing business. Sometimes these new ways are far more effective than the old ways but we never know until we try. Our company embraces trying out new ways, especially during training, in order to find the most efficient way of supporting the community. 

Community

Creating a network of Emergency Management centric individuals is of value to us. As our company develops, so will our network of people and we will maximize making connections between others in order to maximize the effectiveness of an emergency management plan to serve the community.
